Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway currently holds a vast amount of short-term U.S. Treasury securities, more than the amount held by the Federal Reserve.
In its latest earnings report, the bank said it holds $234.6 billion in short-term Treasury bills, up from $130 billion at the end of last year and more than the $195 billion in Treasury bills held on the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet.
Treasury bills are securities issued by the U.S. government with a minimum maturity of four weeks and a maximum maturity of 52 weeks. Investors who hold U.S. Treasury bills can earn interest on these bonds, and the income is exempt from state and local taxes.
