Susan Wojcicki, the business executive who served as YouTube’s chief executive officer for nine years, died Friday at age 56, her family said.
She has been living with non-small cell lung cancer for the past two years.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Wojcicki,” said Wojcicki’s husband, Dennis Troper. He said on Facebook“Susan was not only my best friend and life partner, she was also a brilliant mind, a loving mother and a dear friend to many.
“Her impact on our family and the world is immeasurable. We are heartbroken but grateful for the time we had with her. Please keep our family in your thoughts as we get through this difficult time.”
Wojcicki and Troper have been married since 1998 and have five children.
In February, Wojcicki’s son, Marco Troper, was found dead in his dorm room at the University of California, Berkeley.
She was named CEO of YouTube in 2014 and the following year was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai remembers Wojcicki as an “incredible leader” who played a key role in the company’s success.
“I am incredibly saddened to lose my dear friend after battling cancer for two years,” Pichai said in a statement from X. “As central to Google’s story as anyone, she is hard to imagine the world without her.”
“She was an incredible person, leader and friend who made an incredible impact on the world. I am one of countless Googlers who are better for having known her. We will miss her dearly.”
