Erik ten Hag’s side were the surprise winner of the FA Cup when last time these sides met but comparatively little at stake in this glorified friendly, the odds seem stacked against them again this afternoon, due in no small part to something of a pre-season injury crisis.

Main Events
Erik ten Hag: Speaking to ITV, the Manchester United manager was asked if he was taking today’s Community Shield match seriously, or if he was treating it as part of pre-season preparations.
“It’s part of pre-season,” he said. “I’ve said already that I don’t like friendlies, but we want to win and I’m sure City want to win too, but there’s still the season to go and we’re not going to take any crazy risks. We’re not going to put the players at risk.”
Manchester United: Although some players, such as Marcus Rashford, have had the summer off, Erik ten Hag’s squad is still plagued by injuries and other absences, writes Will Unwin.
Manchester City: Manager Pep Guardiola says City are open to signing a central midfielder and a striker but will not be blackmailed over transfer fees. By Will Unwin
Transfer rumours: Rumours on the street are that Manchester United are close to signing Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt and Nosair Mazraoui, and could pay up to £60 million for the pair. The Dutch centre-back captained Ajax under ten Hag, while the Moroccan full-back also played under ten Hag at Ajax.
Manchester United: In what may come as chilling news to any United fans who already consider their goalkeeper a bit of a pain, Andre Onana has declared he is “taking a lot of risks” this season and is willing to accept any criticism if it means his team can’t win. Jamie Jackson reports…

These teams: Congratulations to 19-year-old Academy graduate midfielder Nico O’Reilly who makes his senior debut for Manchester City today. James McAtee also features in City’s midfield after spending the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United. Erling will start up front, with Jack Grealish absent from the squad after reportedly suffering from an injury.
Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans will be at the heart of Manchester United’s defence, with Lisandro Martinez taking over at left-back in the absence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been linked with a move to West Ham.
Casemiro’s presence in United’s midfield may unsettle some fans, given his poor performances last season and the reports of some disappointing performances on United’s pre-season tour, with Bruno Fernades set to play as a stopgap striker and new signing Joshua Zirkzee likely to start on the bench.

Manchester City latest team news
Ederson missed last weekend’s friendly because he was reported to be in “pain”, but some would be forgiven for being sceptical that he is being wrapped up in cotton wool ahead of a potential move to Saudi Arabia.
John Stones, Kyle Walker, Phil Foden and Rodri are unavailable for selection as they are still on holiday following their run to the final of Euro 2024. Kevin de Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, Ruben Dias, Matheus Nunez and Bernardo Silva have all returned to training this week and are available to play this afternoon.
Erling Haaland, who has not played international duty this summer and is well-rested, is expected to start and will be looking to build on his record of scoring a hat-trick in last weekend’s friendly against Chelsea. Brazilian winger Savio, who joined from Troyes this summer, is also likely to start today. His Argentine colleague Julián Alvarez will not play for City today as he is on the verge of completing a surprise £81.5m move to Atletico Madrid.
Manchester United team news
Manchester United new signing Lenny Yolo is out for three months with a fractured metatarsal, while Tyrell Malasia remains unavailable after missing the whole of last season with a knee injury.
Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are all doubts in United’s defence, while Lisandro Martinez only returned from the Copa America match against Argentina on Monday morning but could play all or part of today’s game.
Joshua Kerktse has not taken part in Manchester United’s pre-season preparation as he is taking another holiday from Disney World following his late call-up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, but he could make his United debut today in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund, who is absent with a hamstring injury. Kerktse, a £42.5m transfer from Bologna, is United’s only fit centre-forward.
Community Shield: Manchester City v Manchester United
Welcome back. Manchester United and Manchester City will meet again at FA HQ for the traditional season opener ahead of next weekend’s Premier League first leg, in a rematch of May’s FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Erik ten Hag’s men were surprise winners in the FA Cup the last time the two teams met, but there was relatively little stakes in this prestigious friendly and a string of pre-season injuries seems to be working against them again this afternoon.
The match between the Manchester rivals kicks off at Wembley at 3pm BST, but in the meantime we’ll be bringing you all the team news and pre-match preparations.
