In the past, Wrexham’s many critics argued that the off-pitch extravaganza was just a sideshow, that the football team was level and the celebrity owners would get bored.
Not on the evidence of this win over Wycombe – welcome to League One’s version of Wrexham 3.0, where after a second successive promotion there seems to be only an upward path.
“When Ryan and Rob are here it just brings the whole place to life,” Phil Parkinson said of the impact Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have on the players, the club and the city as a whole. And that impact was certainly evident as noise levels reached fever pitch before kick-off at Stock Cae Rath, also known as the Race Course Ground.
The pair popped into the home team’s dressing room before kick-off for a quick “chat” to help ease the players’ nerves. The atmosphere was certainly good, and that can’t help but be encouraging for a team facing new levels of pressure. “It’s always uplifting,” striker Steven Fletcher said.
The Hollywood club have enjoyed superhero-like rise over the past two seasons, taking on Wealdstone, Boreham Wood and Dorking Wanderers two seasons ago and, despite Wrexham returning to the same table as Birmingham, Huddersfield and Charlton after 20 years, expectations remain at an all-time high.
But with further promotion in the cards, there is a feeling around the club that it won’t be an easy win, as Parkinson stressed. The only guarantee is that, because it’s Wrexham, it will be a hugely entertaining game. That was evidenced against Wycombe, who dominated in front of a rapturous crowd of 13,214.

League One: Birmingham draw after late penalties
show
Alfie May’s late penalty saved the day Birmingham 1-1 draw read On the opening weekend of the League One season, the Blues, who were relegated from the Championship last season and now managed by new manager Chris Davies, found themselves trailing when Kelvin Ehibatioman scored just before half-time. After Ehibatioman’s second-half shot was ruled out for offside, May scored from the penalty spot with just three minutes remaining to level the score and take a point.

“Nothing is going to be handed to you,” the manager said. “You’re not going to think this is going to be handed to you because you’re not in the National League or League Two. You have to fight like crazy to win. Wycombe are known as a fighting team and were a Championship club not so long ago.
So is Wrexham’s historic third consecutive promotion, after brushing aside a rumpled League One team with play-off hopes, really the stuff of a movie script or reality? In fact, Wrexham’s squad has plenty of League One and Championship experience. Less than 24 hours before kick-off, they announced their club-record signing, Ollie Rathbone, from promotion-favorites Rotherham.
They were storming into a lead within the opening minutes when James McClean’s corner was flicked in the direction of Max Cleworth, who barely missed the target and scored to raucous cheers from the home crowd. The party reached its climax on the half hour mark when Jack Marriott smashed a beautiful volley into the top corner, bringing even more cheers.
Wycombe initially looked like pawns in a scene from a Marvel movie, playing supporting roles to the main character. Parkinson took to the manager’s chair and his every move paid off intriguingly. Wrexham newcomer George Dobson starred in midfield, assisted by runners Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee, the wily McClean was eager to roam on the left wing and Ollie Palmer was a battering ram up front. How could this not be a blueprint for League One success?

Wrexham lost steam as half-time approached and a deft near-post finish from Richard Cone gave the visitors a deserved goal in the second half. Fletcher, brought on from the bench by Parkinson, scored with a curling goal in the 83rd minute, but the game wasn’t over yet, with Wales’ Sam Vokes making it 3-2. In the end, all that mattered to Parkinson, Reynolds, McElhenney and the packed house was the win. And we knew it was going to be fun. Right?
“Every season so far, as a player and as a manager, we’ve had to aim to be at the top,” Parkinson said. “We can’t get too complacent. If we aim for mid-table we could finish bottom, so we’ve got to dream.”
It may have been 20 years ago that Wrexham last played in League One but those 20 years hardly seem to matter now, their only dream is of an exciting future.
