Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said an illegal immigrant who “should not be in the country” has been accused of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl in the sanctuary state of Illinois.
Juan Albizar, a 38-year-old illegal immigrant, was arrested and charged this week near Bourbonnais, Illinois, with sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13. Details of the case are being kept secret by law enforcement to protect the privacy of the child involved.
“While we want to make every effort to protect the victim’s privacy in this case, I think it is vitally important that Kankakee County residents understand that this heinous act was entirely avoidable if nothing else, as this perpetrator should never have been in our country,” Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement.
“I want to thank all of the deputies and investigators who dedicated so much time and effort to this extremely difficult and disturbing case,” Downey said.
Following his arrest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents issued a detention order against Albizar, requesting that he be held if he is released from Kankakee County custody at any time.
