It’s only been 70 days since Emma Hayes took over as head coach of the U.S. women’s soccer team, but the team has already won a major championship.

The United States defeated Brazil 1-0 on Saturday to win the country’s first gold medal since 2012.

Mallory Swanson scored the winning goal in the second half to help the USA hold on to the victory.

Hayes, from London, spoke to NBC’s Mike Tirico after the competition and said he wanted to win the gold medal for the United States.

“I just love it. I come at it with the desire to make the players enjoy themselves and I’ve been at the club for 12 years and had a lot of success, but I was also desperate to do well for my country,” Hayes said. “Winning a gold medal doesn’t come along every day so it’s quite an emotional feeling.”

Hayes was asked why he was so determined to win a gold medal for the United States.

“I love America. America made me. I always say that. America made me, there’s no question about it,” she said.

Hayes has agreed to take on the role of head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team on Nov. 14, 2023, but will remain with Chelsea through the end of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season. Hayes has led Chelsea to another WSL title.
