It was a much closer game than anyone expected and came close to going into overtime, but the U.S. women’s basketball team won again.
Though pushed to the brink by host France, the overwhelming favorites, the U.S. team won 67-66 on Sunday to secure a record eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal and 61st consecutive Olympic berth.
They broke a record held by the U.S. men, who won gold medals seven consecutive years from 1936-1968.
France’s Gabby Williams had a shot off just before the buzzer, but her foot was on the three-point line and the two-point shot left the home team one point short.
Las Vegas Aces star and two-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson led the team with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
The victory follows the U.S. men’s gold medal win over France on Saturday.
