Jordan Chiles score inquiry was made in time and there’s video evidence to prove it, USA Gymnastics says

USA Gymnastics is fighting tooth and nail to help Jordan Chiles defend her bronze medal in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics.

USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Sunday that new video evidence revealed an investigation was conducted within the deadline set by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for judges, which resulted in Chile’s score being changed by 0.1 points.

The change in scoring moved Chile from fifth to third place. Romanian gymnast Ana Barbos lost her podium spot. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation filed a complaint with the Centre for Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the arbitrators ruled that the US investigation was four seconds too late and that Chile’s score of 13.666 should be reinstated.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said early Sunday that the Chilean athletes should return their medals.

“USA Gymnastics formally submitted a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Sunday conclusively proving that coach Cecil Lundy’s request for an investigation was submitted 47 seconds after the scores were announced – within the one-minute deadline set by International Gymnastics Federation rules,” the organization said in a statement.

USA Gymnastics has asked the CAS to reinstate Chile’s bronze medal-winning score of 13.766.

“The basis for the CAS’s decision on Friday to reject the investigation was that ‘the investigation submitted on behalf of Jordan Chiles in the women’s floor exercise final was deemed invalid as it was brought after the one-minute time limit set out in Article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Rules had expired,'” the organisation added.

“Time-stamped video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics on Sunday night shows that Lundy first stated her request for an investigation at the investigation table 47 seconds after the scores were announced, and then made a second statement 55 seconds after the scores were first announced.”

USA Gymnastics said the video footage was not available before the CAS ruling and could not be submitted.

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced early Sunday morning that it would appeal the CAS ruling.

“We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully won the bronze medal. There were significant errors in both the International Gymnastics Federation’s initial scoring and the subsequent CAS appeals process that must be addressed,” the USOPC said.
