Tour de France Femmes 2024: stage one, Rotterdam to The Hague – live | Tour de France Femmes

120km to go: After that nervy wait, the flag is waved, and it’s destination La Haye – The Hague, Den Haag – and the pace is breakneck already.

The teams are idling through the depart fictif, and 7km out, there’s been a crash. Nothing drastic, a few mechanicals, nobody hurt but a measure of the tensions out there. A pair of riders are being paced back to the peloton.

This could be Rotterdam or anywhere, except this year’s opening stage actually does begin in the Dutch port city, before ending in the Hague. It’s a flat day but don’t expect anyone to be taking it easy – who does in modern-day cycling? A sprint finish is likely but so is a breakaway. The sun is hot in Rotterdam, where they are going through the prelims.

Main Events

115km remaining: The roads in Rotterdam are quite narrow until you reach the two-lane roads. There is a lot of roadworks, so this may be a problem. Temperature is 28°C, wind speed 14km/h. No breakaway so far, but tensions are building and the group of 154 riders is scattering. Liddle/Trek with Lizzie Deighan are at the front and there is a big crowd on one of the bridges. Demi Forelling is quite far back in the group, protected by Superdomestic.

Now, off to Rotterdam!

120km remaining: After a tense wait, the flag is waved, the destination is La Haye (The Hague, The Hague) and already the pace is ferocious.

Before departure, the plane is in the air and there are lots of flat tires and turbulence. If that happens, the race will likely be postponed until after kilometre zero. There are huge crowds in the streets of Rotterdam. Elena Pirrone has a flat tyre and her hand is raised. The commissaires know it.

Another favourite for the day is the winner of Paris 2024.

Crash before the start line!

The team was idling at the start and had a crash 7km into the race. Nothing dramatic, just a few mechanical issues but no injuries, but tensions are building as two riders try to catch up with the pack.

Jeremy Whittle predicts that the favourite to win is last year’s winner.

The eight stages, including a road race and time trial split stage on Tuesday, will see the peloton heading south from the Low Countries through the Ardennes, Vosges and Jura mountains into the Alps, culminating at 1,924m above sea level at Col de Glandon on the route into the Alps for Stage 8, where the peloton will climb just under 4,000m.

preamble

This could be Rotterdam or anywhere, but this year’s opening race is an exception. The race actually starts in the Dutch port city and finishes in The Hague. It’s a flat day, but don’t expect anyone to take it easy. Who can do that in modern cycling? There’s a chance of a sprint finish, but also a good chance of a breakaway. The sun is hot in Rotterdam, where the qualifiers are taking place.
