Harris in 'striking distance' of Trump in Florida, pollster says

A new survey conducted in Florida by Suffolk University pollsters found that Vice President Harris is seeing a surge in support in former President Trump’s home state.

USA Today/Suffolk University/WSVN-TV Poll Harris was just five points behind. Among Florida voters, Trump has 42 percent for him to 47 percent for her, just outside the poll’s margin of error.

Florida has 1 million more registered Republicans than Democrats, and Trump won the state in both 2016 and 2020.

“Given all this, I was surprised to see Harris within a five-point margin of victory,” said David Palaiologos, director of the Center for Political Studies at Suffolk University. He told USA Today in a report on Tuesday.

Among Florida independents, the vice president has an approval rating of 41 percent, up from the former president’s 34 percent. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has 10 percent.

“This poll appears to indicate that Republicans’ massive registration advantage was partially offset by Kamala Harris’ win over independents, particularly independent women,” Paleologos said in a press release accompanying the survey. “Florida may be a stronger battleground state than expected, especially given that the abortion rights issue (Fourth Amendment) will be on the statewide ballot, which could lead to increased female turnout.”

Harris has seen her popularity soar in opinion polls since she entered the race last month after President Biden dropped out.

A recent poll by The New York Times and Siena College showed Harris leading Trump by four points in three key battleground states: Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

Harris also leads Trump by 1.4 percentage points in The Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls.

USA Today/Suffolk University/WSVN-TV The poll The poll surveyed 500 Florida general election voters on Aug. 7 and 11 and has a sampling margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
