A look at the FedEx Cup playoffs’ massive prize purses, how it works

Welcome to Playing Through’s daily ritual, Golf Talk Today.

Each day, the crew will discuss a different element of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.

With the playoffs starting this week, I want to explain more about the FedExCup and its huge prize money.

What is the FedEx Cup?

FedEx Cup It’s a season-long race on the PGA Tour, where players accumulate points to advance to a playoff and compete in a three-event series to determine the FedExCup champion.

The 2024 FedEx Cup race began in January and ended after the Wyndham Championship in August, with a total of 36 events in which players can participate to earn points.

Most tournaments award 500 FedEx Cup points to the winner, but there are exceptions to that number: The Zurich Classic, a team event, awards 400 points per winner.

There will also be an additional event where the winner will be awarded 300 points.

The PGA Tour will host 15 events offering 700 or more points in 2024.

Tournaments with over 700 FedEx Cup points up for grabs:

— Players Championship (750)
— Masters Tournament (750)
— PGA Championship (750)
— U.S. Open (750)
— Open (750)
— 8 Signature Events (700)
— FedEx St. Jude Championship (2,000)
— BMW Championship (2,000)

FedEx Cup Playoffs

The FedEx Cup Playoffs will consist of three tournaments.

It starts with the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings and the field tapers off.

— BMW Championship (August 22-25); Top 50 Contestants
Castle Pines Golf Club, Castle Rock, Colorado.
— Tour Championship (August 29-September 1); Top 30 competitors
East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, Georgia.

The first two events are relatively normal, with no cuts after 36 holes.

But the Tour Championship will feature the FedEx Cup Starting Strokes format, a tiered stroke-based system that represents the FedEx Top 30 standings.

The inaugural FedEx Cup Fall Series was set to begin in September 2023. Seven tournaments will be held to finalize the top 125 and determine which players will have continuing opportunities to play on the PGA Tour.

Players ranked 51st or below will carry over points earned in the regular season and the first playoff event. They will continue to accumulate points over the course of seven events to determine their qualification for the 2025 season.

Players ranked 51st through 60th in the standings after the conclusion of the FedExCup Fall Series will also qualify for the first two signature events following the Sentry.
