Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said he was “very confident” he would attend the vice presidential debate with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (Democrat) on October 1, and said he would like to debate Walz “at least once.”
But Vance told Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Wednesday that he wants to have a “real debate” and “see what the debate is like, see who the moderator is, and talk a little bit about the rules.”
“We firmly believe we’ll be there on October 1st, but we’re not going to have this fake debate where there’s no real audience, where the conditions aren’t really set up for an exchange of ideas,” Vance said.
“In other words, we’re not going to get sucked into some fake news media bullshit debate,” he continued. “We’re going to have a real debate, and if CBS agrees to that, then of course we will.”
Waltz, in a post on X on Wednesday, agreed to take part in the vice presidential debate hosted by CBS News on Oct. 1. Proposed Network The debate will be held on either September 17th, September 24th, October 1st or October 8th.
CBS News had originally proposed holding the vice presidential debate in late July or early August, but that date was changed after President Biden dropped out of the race.
Vance added that he would like to debate Walz “more than once.”
“I think it’s important for the American people to see us actually putting our views on the table,” he said. “If you look at the way this campaign has been run, Donald Trump and I have been doing interviews with every media outlet. We’re speaking to every audience that’s in front of us because our vision is very clear.”
The vice presidential debate will take place after the presidential debate.
Former President Trump received debate invitations from Fox News on Sept. 4 and NBC News on Sept. 25. Vice President Harris and her campaign have said they will attend the Sept. 10 debate before agreeing to any other possible dates.
