Nearly six in ten Americans (58%) oppose sex-change drugs or surgery for minors, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey. Found.
Of the 58% who oppose sex reassignment for minors, 47% strongly oppose such measures. The survey found that 30% of Americans support sex reassignment drugs or surgery for minors, while 12% said they were unsure.
Across party lines, Democrats (47%) are more likely to support the use of drugs or surgery to mutilate (often irreversible) genital mutilation on troubled young people than Republicans (13%) or independents (27%).
Additionally, the survey found that nearly half of Americans (47%) oppose schools or teachers counseling students about “sexual or gender identity” without parental consent, while 23% believe schools and teachers should be able to counsel students about transgender and sexuality issues without their parents’ knowledge, while 30% are not sure.
Americans across the political spectrum are uneasy about schools usurping parents’ role in guiding their children’s upbringing: The survey found that 59% of Republicans, 40% of Democrats and 42% of independents believe schools should not instruct students about sex or gender identity without parental permission or consent.
Nearly four in ten Americans (39%) say most schools are “too accommodating” to students who identify as transgender, 24% say most schools don’t do enough, 21% say they are about “about right” in their accommodations, and 17% are unsure.
According to the report, “35% of Democrats, 14% of Republicans, and 21% of independents believe most schools do not do enough to accommodate transgender students,” while “59% of Republicans, 24% of Democrats, and 38% of independents believe most schools do too much to accommodate such students.”
The survey was conducted among 1,237 American adults from Aug. 7-8 through Aug. 11. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
