Several robberies in New York’s Central Park have been linked to groups of illegal immigrant youths, and authorities believe the violent Venezuelan street gang Tren de Aragua is responsible for recruiting the youths and directing the crimes.
The two teens were arrested following the latest assault and robbery that took place on a Manhattan-bound train on Tuesday night.
“When I resisted, trying to take my phone away, they attacked me. They jumped on me,” the victim said. “It’s so upsetting because he was only 11 and he was doing this on the subway.”
Furthermore, the victim, who asked that her name not be published in the media, claims that an 11-year-old boy was the “main perpetrator” and “essentially provoked it.”
The boys were arrested soon after that evening near a taxpayer-funded migrant shelter in midtown Manhattan after police traced a stolen cell phone to the location and found it in the boys’ possession.
“The 11-year-old boy has been staying at the Roosevelt Hotel migrant shelter since last year with his mother and three siblings, said Cataleya, 44, also a Venezuelan asylum seeker at the hotel who spoke to The Post on Thursday.” New York Post Reported.
Police officials also claim they have video footage of an 11-year-old boy using the stolen credit card.
“At this point, we can say with certainty that this is a pattern of immigrant robberies,” said NYPD Sergeant John Chell.
The 11-year-old boy was later released to an unidentified guardian, but the 17-year-old was taken into custody as a juvenile, police said.
“This is the product of a government that has no plan for properly integrating immigrants into our society,” said the NYPD superintendent.
