Lee Greenwood isn’t just a country singer: He’s the author of the patriotic song “God Bless the USA,” and his trip to the Republican National Convention was a memorable one.
Greenwood was given the honor of introducing former President Donald Trump, and while he has done so before, this was different — especially in the wake of the assassination attempt on the president.
“The RNC basically said, ‘When President Trump comes into the building, introduce him at the right time,'” Greenwood explained. “I was waiting until President Trump came into the building, and then I noticed he had his running mate with him, and Vance was walking with him.”
“I also noticed his son, Don Jr., because instead of the usual gleeful clapping and ‘This is great, that’s my dad,’ he looked more intently around and asked, ‘Is anyone going to take another shot at my dad?'” Greenwood continues.
“Yeah,” Pat Gray of Pat Gray Unleashed says sympathetically, “I’m sure they were nervous.”
“So when he finally sat down, and then the vice president sat down, and he turned to face me, I just locked eyes with him for a second, and we’d been through this moment before, and I knew it was the moment to introduce him,” Greenwood said, adding, “I just said how I felt, and then I sang the rest of the song.”
Not only did Greenwood have the honor of introducing Trump after the assassination attempt, but Trump has also borrowed and played Greenwood’s hit songs at each of his rallies.
“We never talked about it,” Greenwood told Gray.
“He just did it and you were happy with it, unlike most artists,” Gray asks.
“I’m a conservative Christian,” Greenwood replies, “and I wasn’t surprised, but you know, as you pointed out, I wrote this song 40 years ago, so I was just surprised.”
“Very few songs are passed down from generation to generation, so I thought, ‘Wow, this is amazing,'” he added.
