Trump recruits Tulsi Gabbard for debate prep after she ‘dominated’ Harris in 2019 primary

She’s memorable Kamala Harris During a much-talked-about debate in 2019, former Hawaii state representative Tulsi Gabbard was approached by former President Trump to offer her valuable input ahead of a debate with the 2024 Democratic candidate.

Gabbard, who ran for president in the 2020 Democratic primary, said Trump had reached out to her to help her better prepare for the debate, Fox News Digital reported.

The former congresswoman was a scathing critic of Harris during a 2019 primary debate, blasting her for jailing hundreds of Californians for marijuana violations while she was attorney general, while also bragging about her own marijuana use.

“After she sent over 1,500 people to prison for marijuana offenses, she laughed when asked if she’d ever smoked marijuana,” Gabbard said on stage.

According to the New York Times, Gabbard has already been attending practice sessions at Mar-a-Lago, former President Trump’s private club and home.

The Trump campaign confirmed that Gabbard had been asked by Trump to help prepare for the debate, citing her performance in debates in the run-up to the 2020 election.

“As evidenced by his resounding victory over Joe Biden, President Trump has proven himself to be one of the best debaters in political history,” Trump spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a statement. “While he will not require traditional debate preparation, he will continue to meet with respected policy advisors and effective communicators, such as Tulsi Gabbard, who outshone Kamala Harris in the 2020 debates.”

Gabbard left the Democratic Party two years ago to become an independent and has become a fixture among conservatives, even being considered as a possible running mate for former President Donald Trump.

During a high-profile exchange in 2019, Gabbard said she was “deeply concerned” about Harris’ record as a prosecutor.

“She fought to preserve a cash bail system that keeps people in prison past the end of their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California and that worst impacts poor people,” Gablad said.

Harris responded that she helped reform California’s criminal justice system, “making it a national model for what needs to be done,” and that she supported legalizing marijuana in the United States.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve done and the decision I’ve made to actually do the work rather than give flashy speeches or sit on the floor as a member of the legislature,” fired back Ms. Harris, who served as San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general before becoming vice president.

Gabbard on Thursday called Harris “useless” and claimed her campaign “creepers” were worried about what would happen if she had to explain her policy positions.

“She was [July 2019] “I think we’re arguing the same thing that her campaign staff is worried about right now…Kamala Harris is an empty person,” Gabbard said on “America’s Newsroom.”

“They’re trying to create a new version of Kamala Harris that fits the pollsters’ predictions so she can say anything to gain voter support. This is the most offensive thing, because they think we’re stupid enough to forget her record.”

Referencing her 2019 debate with Harris, Gabbard said the exchange exposed the vice president’s hypocrisy, which remains relevant in this year’s election.

“Her words were so different from her actual actions, and she had no answer for that,” Gabbard said.

“She offered no explanation. She never admitted to or tried to justify her actions. And what’s important to voters going into this election is that Kamala Harris will say whatever she thinks needs to be said.”
