Comedian and podcaster Theo Fong has been doing great interviews lately, and his conversation with Bernie Sanders is no exception.
So Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” shared a timely clip from “This Past Weekend” in which Sanders acknowledged that Democrats stole the Democratic nomination from him after he won the first few primaries.
“To be honest with you, I felt like I wasn’t treated fairly,” Fung told Sanders, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“This is what happens when you challenge the establishment. We won the first three primaries, but then the establishment got very nervous,” Sanders explained. “There were a lot of candidates in the Democratic primary, and they said, ‘Hey, why don’t we all just drop out and have Joe Biden as the only candidate?'”
“Do they call you? Do they call you and are like, you can’t go any further?” Phuong asked, adding: “How does the system work?”
“What happened is I won the popular vote in Iowa. I won the New Hampshire primary. I won the Nevada primary. Those were the first three elections, and then the front page of the New York Times said, ‘The Democratic establishment is very worried that Bernie Sanders is going to win the whole thing.'”
Sanders said there was pressure on other candidates to drop out so Biden could win, but once they did, they all rallied around the current president.
“Do you think our electoral system is still democratic?” Fong asks.
“Yes and no,” Sanders responded. “If you’re going to win, and I have 10 times as much money as you, I’ll give you a 95% chance of beating you. So that’s a fact.”
“In terms of who has the real power, it’s the rich people. I use the word oligarchy, and an oligarchy is a society in which a small number of very wealthy people control the economic and political life of a country. I think we are moving rapidly in that direction,” he added.
“In a way it almost feels like privatized communism,” Phuong replies.
“That’s a very good point,” Sanders says, pleasantly surprised.
