As liberals flocked to Chicago this week excited by the possibility of electing America’s first female president, the event was also packed with embarrassing gaffes, verbal blunders, and some hilariously awkward exchanges.
From Nancy Pelosi’s “toilet paper” rant to a weirdly awkward hip-hop dance party, here’s a look at the best and worst moments from the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Awkward puns
Democrats are calling their “roll call” on rappers Lil Jon performing He performed his raunchy early 2000s hit “Get Low” alongside politicians dancing awkwardly in suits.
The song, which usually has the lyrics “To the window/To the wall,” was neatly adapted for the occasion by a hip-hop artist who inserted an awkward “Kamala Harris/Governor Waltz” pun.
DJ Cassidy, along with other rhythm-challenged lawmakers and lobbyists, played state-themed songs like Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”
Size King Obama
Former President Barack Obama blasted Republican candidate Donald Trump for his “bizarre obsession with crowd size” while Trump appeared to make a provocative phallic gesture with his hands.
Obama, 63, pointed to Trump’s “obsession” during his closing speech on the second day of the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, gesturing as he got to the word “size,” then quickly lowering his hand in shock.
Groovin’ Boomers
Senior citizens attending the Democratic National Convention, titled “Baby Boomers for Harris Waltz Rockin’ Doo-Wop Party,” belted out tunes from the era, singing classics with embarrassingly altered lyrics to reflect their enthusiastic support for Harris.
“Joe endorsed Kamala on Sunday and our hearts stopped. Da-do, run, run, run, tu-do, run, run,” they sang in the style of the Crystals’ 1963 hit “Da-Do Ron Ron.”
“And then Kamala wrote that she called her partner Tim, ‘Da-doo-doo run, run, run, doo-wop.'”
And to the tune of the chorus of The Tokens’ 1961 song “Weemowe,” they sang: “Kamala, Kamala, get rid of Trump.”
Eric Adams’ “sexual” gaffe
A Freudian slip? When asked by a reporter about the federal corruption investigation surrounding him, New York City Mayor Eric Adams accidentally gave an obscene response.
“What makes me really good as mayor is my ability to be sexually oriented and stay focused,” he said, apparently meaning “to deliver” or “to keep focused.”
Some said the gaffe was more embarrassing than his missing the opportunity to speak at the Democratic National Convention.
Speaker Pelosi in the pot
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made headlines Wednesday when audience members thought toilet paper fell out of her pants as she took the stage, but sources told The Washington Post that it was actually notes for her speech.
Pelosi (D-Calif.), 84, left what appeared to be a square of white paper near the podium, sparking speculation online.
AOC’s “fake” accent
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was mocked for her “weird” sudden accent change after she suddenly appeared to adopt a “Southern accent” during a fiery speech in which she called President Trump a second-rate union buster.
“What accent is AOC using here?” one commenter quipped.
Others said the “accent” sounded like a mix of Australian and East Indian.
