Kamala Harris Pledges to ‘Restore’ Abortion Nationwide if Elected

Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination on Thursday, casting the election as “a battle for America’s future” and saying she would move the country forward while Republican candidate Donald Trump is “taking us back to the past.” Harris, who is seeking to become the first female president of the United States, also pledged to support re-legalizing abortion nationwide if elected. The Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade has once again left the issue up to the states.

“As part of his platform, he and his allies will restrict access to birth control, ban medication abortions, and enact nationwide anti-abortion laws with or without Congress’ involvement,” Harris argued. “And, shockingly, he plans to create a National Anti-Abortion Coordinator and force states to report women’s miscarriages and abortions. Simply put, they’ve lost their minds.”

President Trump has said he will not sign a nationwide abortion ban, believing the issue should be left to individual states. ABC News A fact check of Harris’ speech said most of her abortion allegations were culled from “Project 2025,” a document unrelated to the campaign that Trump has repeatedly denied.

“If Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, as President of the United States I will be proud to sign it into law,” Harris said.

“Other fundamental freedoms are also at stake,” she said. said.

“The freedom to live safely from gun violence in our schools, communities and places of worship; the freedom to love those we love openly; pride“The freedom to breathe clean air, drink clean water, live free from the pollutants that contribute to the climate crisis. And the freedom that unlocks all other freedoms: the freedom to vote,” Harris said, referring to LGBT issues.

Harris promised to be a president who will “unite us in our highest aspirations” and “always fight for the American people.”

The vice president said he supports Israel.

“I will always defend Israel’s right to self-defense and I will always ensure that Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the Israeli people must never again face the horrors unleashed by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, including the unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival,” she said.

“At the same time, what has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months has been tragic – many innocent lives lost, starving people repeatedly fleeing for safety, and the scale of suffering is heartbreaking. President Biden and I are working to end this war so that Israel is safe, the hostages are free, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity.”

She said Americans are “the heirs of the greatest democracy in the history of the world.”

“I will never waver in defending America’s security and ideals,” she said, “because in the enduring struggle between democracy and tyranny, I know where I stand and where the United States of America belongs. My fellow Americans, I love this country with all my heart, and everywhere I go, everyone I meet, I see a nation that is ready to move forward, ready to take the next step in this great American journey.”
