Adam Scott knew his 63 was coming; makes history at BMW Championship

Adam Scott I had a hunch that I would record a low score at some point this week.

After all, he’s been playing some solid golf over the past month – a runner-up at the Scottish Open, a top 10 at the British Open and a top 20 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship meant the Australian was on track heading into this week’s BMW Championship – but no one could have predicted he’d shoot a 9-under 63 on Friday to take a commanding lead through 36 holes – except Scott.

In fact, he New Course Record At Castle Pines.

“That’s actually what happened in the practice round,” Scott said when asked if he expected to shoot 63 on this course.

“I knew people would be in a slump, and yesterday was a bit tough… but after the rain yesterday; [the greens are] “It’s a little bit softer. I can definitely attack it. If I’m in good form, they should go for the pin.”

Still, Scott didn’t think he had the best practice range session before Friday’s round, which is odd considering he posted his worst score of the season.

“Today, I left the shooting range. [I did not feel] “I’ve got a pretty good rhythm going. The driver takes off and it’s kind of running along the ground and hitting it straight down the mountain so it’s quite difficult to really get a grip of how I’m hitting it. It’s a strange feeling,” Scott explained.

“But I stayed calm and then I made a couple of putts and got a little bit of rhythm back. But it was a great round. I thought I took advantage of the good conditions this morning and I feel ready to play hard on Sunday.”

After a birdie on the par-5 first hole, rated the second-easiest hole so far this week, Scott sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the fifth hole, then sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-4 sixth hole, the hardest hole on the course, and suddenly Scott was in sole possession of first place at 7-under.

He added six more birdies in the final 11 holes to move to 13 under at the halfway point. The best shot of the day came on the par-3 16th hole..

“I didn’t play very aggressively, but I thought I played well,” Scott said.

“My putting was really good today.”

Scott led by a wide margin on the greens on Friday, gaining 4.67 strokes, making nearly every shot except for a 32-foot shot that just missed the cup on the 18th hole.

“I [7-under]”I thought, ‘This is a good round,'” Scott said.

“Then on the last hole, I wanted to go for the pin, so I hit it close to the pin with a 9-iron. 10 under sounded good, but some wise old soul said I’ll aim a little left and see if I can make that long putt. It’s fun to go for a low score. It’s been a while. I can’t remember the last time I shot a 63 here. But it feels good to go for a low score. I’ve still got it in me. Hopefully I’ll have one more this week.”

Scott hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since the Genesis Invitational in 2020. A win this week would mark the 15th victory of his illustrious PGA Tour career.
