An unfortunate series of events occurred during Sunday’s game between the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies in the Bronx that saw an MLB umpire being carried off on a stretcher wearing a neck corset.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second, Giancarlo Stanton hit a pitch from Austin Gomber and the handle of his bat broke.
The broken bat flew backwards and struck home plate umpire Nick Murray in the facemask.

Marley immediately went down to one knee in obvious pain, but tried to watch the game unfold as Stanton hit a fly single to left field to load the bases against the Rockies.
As the clock expired, all eyes were on Marley, who remained on one knee, while Yankees medical staff and players including Stanton, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Aaron Judge checked on him at home plate.

Rockies catcher Drew Romo also showed good sportsmanship by quickly turning around to check on Marley during the play.

A few minutes later, Marley was carried off the field on a stretcher with a neck corset placed around his neck.
With Marley no longer able to call balls and strikes, crew chief Marvin Hudson donned protective gear and stood behind the catcher in his colleague’s place.
There was an umpire short for the remaining innings.
All umpires, especially catcher umpires, are at risk of being hit by pitches, foul balls or bats during the season. Some of these injuries involve just the ringing of the bell and a large bruise, but some are more serious, which is why so many players were checking Marley.

The Yankees, Rockies and everyone watching at Yankee Stadium will hope that the neck brace is more of a precaution than anything else as Marley undergoes further testing.
