New Toyota Tacoma boasts American-made muscle

It’s hard to blame Toyota for delaying an update to the Tacoma: Nearly two decades since its last major redesign, the Tacoma remains the world’s best-selling midsize pickup.

But even the most avid tach driver has a limited patience, which is why the automaker has finally given the beloved workhouse a major makeover for 2024. It’s been worth the wait.

The first thing that catches your eye is the modern, comfortable interior, which finally puts the Tacoma up against competitors like the Chevrolet Colorado and Ford Ranger. But the improvements here aren’t just cosmetic: This is a better truck in every way.

The TRD Sport-spec Tacoma, in particular, is highly configurable: Gone is the old V6, and the new Tacoma comes with a choice of either a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (278 horsepower, 317 pound-feet of torque) or the i-Force Max hybrid (326 horsepower, 465 pound-feet).

The TRD Sport is available with a six-speed manual option in addition to the eight-speed automatic, and can be specified with either 2WD or 4WD, with one restriction from Toyota: this model is only available in Double Cab (Crew Cab).

The big drawback is the price: With an MSRP of $65,395, the TRD Sport is $17,000 more expensive than a similarly equipped Colorado, but even the more basic trim offers significant improvements.

By the way, these engines are Toyota Huntsville, Alabama PlantThe company recently expanded the business with a $222 million investment.
