US service members injured after wild storm hits McConnell Air Force Base

An air show expected to draw thousands of people was canceled at McConnell Air Force Base on Sunday due to severe storms that left six U.S. soldiers and other civilians injured.

McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas, reported 10 people suffered minor injuries from a slow-moving, wet microburst that brought high winds, lightning and rain to the base.

Six of the injured were military or medical personnel and four were civilian sales personnel, base spokesman John Van Winkle said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Both suffered “minor injuries.”

One airman and one civilian man suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital, and all had been off the airfield when the high winds hit, Van Winkle said.

Due to the bad weather schedule, spectators had not yet entered the event area.

Sunday’s McConnell Frontiers in Flight air show was canceled earlier in the day due to storm concerns. McConnell said a slow-moving, moist microburst had been hovering over the base throughout the morning. The microburst brought wind gusts of up to 54 mph to the McConnell Field airfield.

“Due to the damage to services, the base was unable to conduct a safe air show and was forced to make the decision to cancel the air show,” Van Winkle said. “Safety is always a top priority for McConnell Base, especially when hosting local community members at the air show.”

Kansas State Trooper Joe Owen said the air show suffered “significant wind damage, including at least one injury.”
