A brawl broke out during a women’s college soccer game between Rutgers University and the University of Massachusetts on Sunday, with multiple punches being exchanged after a whistle was blown for a foul.
Teammates eventually had to step in to break up the fight on the field in Amato, Massachusetts, which involved two players: Zia Garman, a senior at Rutgers University, and Ashley Lamond, a senior at the University of Massachusetts.
The commotion began 55 minutes into the game when Garman fouled another UMass player from behind, sending both players to the ground.

Lamond came over to pick up the ball at Garman’s feet, but the Scarlet Knights player clearly disputed it.
The two began pushing and shoving, with Garman landing the first punch, then things got ugly, with Lamond shoving Garman to the ground after being pulled by the hair.

After teammates were able to separate the players, the referee, as expected by everyone on the pitch and in the crowd, showed both players red cards and sent them off from the game.

Both teams were forced to finish the match with 10 men, but the atmosphere remained tense until the final whistle.
Four yellow cards were issued in the final 35 minutes of the match, two for each team. Ultimately, the Minutewomen emerged winners of the match, beating the Scarlet Knights 1-0.
This was Rutgers’ third game of the new season, after beating NJIT 1-0 in the season opener on Aug. 15 and drawing 1-1 with Wake Forest on Aug. 18.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts picked up its first win of the season against Rutgers after losing 2-0 to Syracuse and 3-2 to Army in previous games.
