A shocking exit from the 2024 U.S. Open has already been announced.
Greek star Maria Sakkari, the ninth seed, retired after just one set due to an apparent injury in her first-round match against China’s Wang Yafan on Court 17 on Monday.
The 29-year-old Sakkari lost the first set 2-6 and had treatment on his neck and shoulder during a medical timeout.
Sakkari has struggled at Grand Slams since reaching the semifinals at the U.S. Open and French Open in 2021, losing in the first round five times.
She had failed to get past the third round in 11 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since reaching the fourth round at the 2022 Australian Open.
Sakkari recently competed for Greece at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she lost in the round of 16 as the seventh seed to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.
