Nassau County police said officers were called to a home in Syosset, Long Island, just before noon Sunday and found a man dead from a gunshot wound on the lawn.

When police searched the home, they found four bodies with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities announced that all five people died at the scene.

Wendy Paisner, a longtime neighbor, said According to WPIX-TV, the homeowner recently passed away and the family was meeting with a real estate agent to sell the house, and one of the sons was living with them and they believe he is the suspected shooter.

“I think he just lost it,” Paisner said. “He was one of four children and they were selling the house, but he’d lived there his whole life. He really needed help. I didn’t think he’d take his whole family. He was distraught and I thought maybe he’d done this to himself.”

Other neighbors said the son had recently retired from being a volunteer firefighter after his mother died.

Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder asked the public to assist in the investigation before making any significant statements.

“In my 41 years, that was probably one of the most horrific scenes I’ve ever seen,” Ryder said at a news conference Monday. “I went into the back room of that home and there were four victims lying there who had been shot multiple times.”

Ryder said their primary concern is the wellbeing of surviving family members, but added that they also offer peer support groups to address officers’ emotional needs.
