of Washington Free Beacon I recently came across a complaint filed at the University of Washington detailing 20 instances of plagiarism in a 2004 doctoral dissertation. Whiteness in racial dialogue: A discourse analysis. According to New York Post:
Among the examples cited are two paragraphs reproduced almost in their entirety from a paper by Northeastern University's Thomas Nakayama, an Asian American, and his co-author Robert Krizek, but which DiAngelo fails to properly attribute.
In another example, the complaint alleges that DiAngelo misrepresented a piece of writing by Stacey Lee, an Asian American professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In it, rather than clearly stating that Lee was summarizing the work of scholar David Theo Goldberg, the information was presented as if DiAngelo himself was providing the summary.
Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, said DiAngelo's work has risen to the level of “forgery” in some circles. “It's never appropriate to use secondary sources without citing them, and even worse, to present them as your own. That's plagiarism,” Wood said.
Asked about the allegations, University of Washington spokeswoman Dana Robinson Sloat said: NY Post“We are committed to the integrity of research conducted at Washington University, and all complaints are carefully reviewed.”
As the Free Beacon points out, DiAngelo was a relatively unknown professor when his book was published, but he was catapulted to national stardom in 2020 following the death of George Floyd.
