Two people were killed and one seriously injured when a tire exploded while being removed from a Delta Airlines plane at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The explosion happened in a maintenance area at the airport early Tuesday morning, killing a Delta employee and contractor and seriously injuring an employee of another airline, local media said. WS2 2015/03/13.
Delta Airlines offered its condolences to the victims in a statement on Tuesday.
“The Delta family is heartbroken to learn that two team members were killed and another was injured in an incident that occurred this morning at our Atlanta Technical Operations and Maintenance Facility (TOC3). We are offering our full support to the family and colleague during this extremely difficult time,” the airline wrote.
“Delta's family is grateful for the swift action of the emergency responders and medical teams at the scene. We are now working with local authorities to conduct a full investigation to determine what happened.”
The plane was en route from Las Vegas to Atlanta on Sunday night. The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.
