CA Democrats Pass Bill to Give Illegal Aliens $150,000 for Home Loans; Newsom to Consider

California Democrats have passed a bill in the state senate that would offer mortgages of up to $150,000 to undocumented immigrants buying first-time homes in the state.

This bill: 1840The bill passed the Legislature in a separate form and will return to the General Assembly for approval before being sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D) desk.

Breitbart News reported on Monday:

1840The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno), would amend existing program For first-time homebuyers, it would ensure that applicants “are not disqualified solely on the basis of their immigration status.”

The bill has already passed the California Senate and is currently being considered in the state Assembly, both of which are controlled by Democrats.

Depending on the borrower's situation, the loans offered do not require a down payment or interest, but only the repayment of the principal plus a premium equal to a percentage of the increase in the home's value.

Sacramento NBC affiliate NBC Reported:

The bill passed on a party-line 23-11 vote, although some Democrats did not vote. The Senate sent the bill back to the Assembly, where it will be sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom for a final vote.

California Dream for All Program The program offered 1,700 first-time homebuyers up to 20 percent of the home's price to help with down payments and costs, but the program ran out of funds in the first 11 days of the year, and the issue was at the center of a Senate debate on Tuesday.

Republicans worried that more applicants would further crowd the program and reduce support for veterans and legal immigrants. Democrats criticized some of the rhetoric surrounding the bill, pointing out that undocumented immigrants who apply for the funds would have to work and pay taxes.

It's unclear whether Newsom will sign the bill. With immigration and border security top of mind for voters in 2024, the governor may decide to delay expanding California's housing assistance program until after the November election.
