The Steelers were winless in the preseason, and longtime coach Mike Tomlin told reporters after Saturday's 24-17 loss to the Lions that a decision on the starting quarterback would be made “at the end of the week.”
“We have Steelers-Steelers games three days this week, so why not do it then?” he said. According to ESPN:.
“If we start making decisions before that's done, it will minimize the Steelers-vs-Steelers work. We have plenty of time to prepare for Atlanta and make decisions and announcements regarding sharing, pecking order and so on, so we'll do that over the weekend.”
It was a lackluster preseason for Wilson and Fields, the Bears' 2021 first-round draft pick.
Wilson threw for 73 yards, while Fields threw for 199 yards on more attempts and completed 70.4 percent of his passes.
Both quarterbacks are looking for fresh starts after parting ways with their former teams.
The Broncos released Wilson earlier this year after just two seasons, leaving the team with $85 million in dead cap money.
Fields, 25, joined the Steelers in March after three seasons with Chicago, and the Bears selected USC outfielder Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to replace Fields.
The Steelers made a quarterback swap this offseason, sending 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Eagles in exchange for draft capital.
Pittsburgh opens the season on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Atlanta.
