Megyn Kelly mocked Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris for bringing along running mate Tim Walz for her first media interview, calling the Minnesota governor a “big white blanket.”
“You can't do that with a pacifier right next to you and a big white blanket over you every time you do an interview,” the former Fox and NBC anchor said Wednesday on SiriusXM's podcast “The Megyn Kelly Show.”
Harris finally agreed to appear for the taped sit-down interview, which is set to air on CNN at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, five weeks after she was named as his successor after the aging President Joe Biden decided not to seek reelection.
“Five weeks after the shocking developments in the Democratic race, the 'Emotional Support Governor' will meet with the presidential candidate to talk about the White House, who's running the country, how she became the nominee and what she really has in store for us,” Kelly said.
“I used to carry a big white blanket with me everywhere I went,” Kelly recalled.
“He happens to be white. He's her big white blanket and she needs him to talk to the press.”
Kelly also questioned whether Waltz would “swoop in to save her” during an interview with CNN's Dana Bash.
“If I was running for president and I had a vice president sitting next to me, male or female, and I was asked a difficult question and the vice president stepped in to help me, I would say, 'Sorry, that was meant for me,' and I would carry on answering,” Kelly said.
She wondered whether Waltz “would have the guts to actually intervene, because he knew it would undermine her, and yet that's what he's there for.”
“Also, even if she doesn't use the big white blanket like that, it's still half the question. She sits with Dana Bash, but she only has to do half the allotted time, and he answers the rest,” Kelly said.
Kelly predicted there wouldn't be any “big blunders” in the Harris/Waltz interview because Bash is “definitely sympathetic to the Democratic Party.”
“I don't want to ruin my career because of these discussions,” Bash said.
The Washington Post has reached out to the Harris-Waltz campaign and CNN for comment.
Kelly said Ms Harris' refusal to give interviews so far “doesn't inspire my credibility as a woman”.
“Everyone should be celebrating that she could potentially be the first female president of the United States, and yet she can't even sit down and do an interview by herself,” she said.
“Ms. Harris, I have news for you: that's not how the presidency is supposed to work.”
