Drake Maye opens up after falling short in Patriots quarterback battle

Drake Maye isn't depressed about the fact he wasn't named the Patriots' Week 1 starter.

When asked by reporters Thursday how he responded to the news, the rookie quarterback said he “won't say I'm disappointed,” but added, “Obviously, I want to play.”

The Patriots named Jacoby Brissett the starter for their Week 1 game against the Bengals, which seemed the most likely outcome at the start of training camp as the Patriots wanted to give Maye time to develop.

The No. 3 overall pick played well in camp and the preseason, including a 4-yard touchdown run against the Eagles and completing 13 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown pass in the final preseason game of the year against the Commanders.

Ultimately, May felt there wasn't much else he could have done to earn a starting spot.

“No, I think I left it all there.” May said, according to a report from NBC Sports Boston.“I don't regret coming back. It worked out that way.”

“We're still one play away from this, so we have to be ready for any situation. I'll be here to help Jacoby and continue to give advice to the quarterback staff. Nothing's changing. I'm still rooting for him and cheering him on.”

Brissett began his career with New England in 2016, making two starts that season while Tom Brady was suspended.

Since then, he has had stints in Indianapolis, Miami, Cleveland and Washington DC.

“It's been a lot of work, long days and long nights to get to this point,” Brissett said. According to ESPN:“I'm very grateful and excited for this opportunity.”

Patriots head coach Jerrod Mayo said the team is “backed by Jacoby 100 percent.”
