The Vermont Department of Health is instructing teachers and families not to use the words “son” or “daughter” when speaking with students.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the department suggested using “family-friendly, inclusive language” for the new school year.
“Equity in the classroom is a vital component of a productive and healthy learning environment,” the post reads.
The ministry also recommended using the words “children” and “children” instead of “daughter” and “son”, claiming that these are more “gender-neutral”.
“The Vermont Department of Health is asking to stop using the words 'son' and 'daughter' in order to be more inclusive. It is wrong to erode the meaning of words and dismantle the family as a building block of society. Christians must stand for truth and not succumb to these issues,” the Dansbury Institute, a nonpartisan group of churches that focuses on public policy issues, said in a post on X.
The Vermont Department of Health said in a statement that the guide is “intended to encourage inclusive language when you don't know someone's family situation.”
The state health department is promoting a “health equity glossary.”
The glossary defines gender as “social, psychological and emotional characteristics that are often influenced by societal expectations and that lead to people being categorised as male, female, a mix of both or neither”, and states that it is “socially constructed”.
It also defines “internalized racism” as “a set of private beliefs, prejudices, and ideas held by an individual about the superiority of white people and the inferiority of people of color.”
It goes on to define the term “white” as “a social and political construct, not a biological one,” and links to a 2016 video, “The Shockingly Racist History of 'Caucasian' | Decoding.”
“White privilege” is defined in the glossary as “the set of unquestioned and unearned advantages, rights, benefits, and options that people have simply because they are white.”
