Kamala Harris and Tim Walz sat down for their first interviews as 2024 Democratic candidates on Thursday and only two words came to mind.
That's dishonest.
Trainwreckalicious.
5 memorable moments from Democratic candidate Kamala Harris' first interview: “I won't ban fracking”
The second word may not be an actual word, but it's appropriate.
The edited and packaged interview, taped early Thursday morning, was also an example of a missed opportunity for CNN anchor Dana Bash.
While Bash deserves credit for (gently) challenging Harris' “Etch-a-sketch” positions on, say, the border and domestic energy, the Democratic candidate's responses were Baghdad Bob-level lies.

About hydraulic fracturing:
“I made it very clear in the 2020 debates that I would not ban fracking. As vice president, I did not ban fracking. As president, I have no intention of banning fracking,” she said.
There is zero evidence that this claim is true. Zero. But Bash allowed it anyway.
At the border, the conversation became humorous.
“My values are about what needs to be done to keep our borders secure. Those values haven't changed,” Harris said. “As California's attorney general for two terms, I've prosecuted transnational criminal organizations, violations of U.S. laws on transit, illegally passing guns and drugs, red flags, and those are my values.”
Harris defends policy shifts in first interview since taking office
There, the Vice President reflects on his time before he was Vice President and before he became a Senator, and talks about how tough he was on the border.
It's a complete joke and an insult to the intelligence of the American voter.
Here's what CNN's Dana Bash should have asked:
Question 1: You support a tax on unrealized gains on capital gains. Some critics argue that it would lead to a stock market crash. Explain why they're wrong.
Question 2: You've voiced your support for sanctuary cities. Why do you believe they would work?
Harris claims she “clarified” her position on fracking in 2020 — records tell a different story
Question 3: You support free health care for illegal immigrants. How would this be paid for, and why should illegal immigrants have access to the same health care as legal immigrants?
It's a complete joke and an insult to the intelligence of the American voter.
Question 4: You support cash-free bail laws at a time when crime is driving residents out of cities like New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, etc. Why do you think cash-free bail laws are best for communities?
Kamala Harris must 'respond' to Americans as she fends off media, campaign adviser says
Question 5: You support biological males competing against biological females in sports. Why do you think that's fair when there are clear advantages that are dangerous to female athletes?
Bonus question: Can men also get pregnant?
What's clear is that while there were dozens of questions to ask, the point is clear: Dana Bash and CNN failed here.
And just know this: Vice President Kamala Harris will most likely not be giving any more interviews before the September 10 debate.

With the holidays coming up, Kamala Harris has spent nearly six weeks waiting for one interview, and her shaky performance means we'll almost certainly not see much of her before the debate, just as President Joe Biden was not seen for days in preparation for the June 27 debate in Atlanta.
Apparently, that didn't matter, because Biden and Harris have the same problem: Take away the teleprompter and scripted speech and they both become human Chernobyls.
Footage of Thursday's interview will be seen by millions between now and the weekend, and while it remains to be seen what the outcome will be, it's safe to say it will do more harm than good.
Nate Silver's 538 Predictions projected that former President Donald Trump was likely to win the November election as of Thursday afternoon.

Just as Americans got to know Harris through missteps in interviews and debates four years ago, the honeymoon is over.
2024 could see a sequel to that movie, which didn't end well for her as the 2020 presidential candidate withdrew before the year even began.
