Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (Democrat) revealed on Thursday that she had tested positive for COVID-19 and vowed to follow public health guidelines.
Bowser is schedule NBC Washington reports that he had plans to visit Garfield Elementary School to tour renovations and celebrate the first day of school for pre-kindergarten students, but those plans have had to be canceled.
“Yesterday, we tested positive for COVID-19. We are disappointed that we will not be able to celebrate the first day of kindergarten with our little ones. We will continue to follow public health guidelines,” Bowser said. Written In a social media post:

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Governor Bowser issued an order requiring people over the age of 2 to wear masks when they go out in public, with adults who violate the order facing fines of up to $1,000, Breitbart News reported at the time.
“The new Mayor's Order on Masks requires that anyone who may be in contact with another person for more than a moment must wear a mask when going out in public,” the mayor's order reads in part.
Bowser received significant backlash in August 2021 after she reportedly celebrated her birthday by posing for a photo with comedian Dave Chappelle without a mask, according to Breitbart News.
She was reportedly seen without a mask just hours before the mask mandate went into effect, sparking a wave of criticism.

“As soon as the photos surfaced, critics took to social media to slam Governor Bowser for her decision to impose the mask mandate and then not following her own rule in the hours leading up to it going into effect, as well as for holding a wedding ceremony after the mandate went into effect,” the outlet reported.
Following the recent Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, several attendees have tested positive for coronavirus, according to Breitbart News.
