Shohei Ohtani has already made history this season.
But he's looking to make more history before the year is over.
Ohtani joined the 40-40 club in dramatic fashion on Aug. 23. Los Angeles Dodgers The superstar came to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning. Tampa Bay Rays With the score tied at 3-3 and the bases loaded, Ohtani immediately hit a grand slam to give the Dodgers a walk-off win and make his mark in the record books. With that home run and a stolen second base earlier in the game, Ohtani became just the sixth MLB player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a single season.
Additionally, Ohtani became the fastest player in MLB history to accomplish this feat, joining the team after just 126 games this season.
But Ohtani's march to the MLB record books isn't over yet, as he followed up Friday night's home run with another against the Rays on Saturday, bringing his season total to 41.
Though Ohtani didn't hit a home run or steal a base on Sunday against the Rays, the superstar had hit 41 home runs and stolen 40 bases through Monday, Aug. 26, and is on track to form a new, exclusive club.
50-50 club.
No player in MLB history has ever hit 50 home runs and stolen 50 bases in the same season. If Ohtani could accomplish the feat, it would set a new standard for speed and power in baseball. But for now, Ohtani is on pace to reach those milestones. With 41 home runs in 128 games, Ohtani is on pace to hit 52 home runs this season (51.9 home runs to be exact).
Ohtani has 40 stolen bases in 127 games and is on pace to record 51 stolen bases (50.6 to be exact) over the course of a 162-game season.
Let's follow Ohtani's pursuit of baseball immortality.
