A Dallas police officer was found shot to death in his patrol vehicle in the Oak Cliff neighborhood Thursday night, and two responding officers were also shot, one of them in critical condition.
Dallas police officials reported they received a call about an officer in distress around 10 p.m. Thursday. Other officers responded to the Oak Cliff neighborhood and found the marked patrol officer had been shot. According to Fox 4 Dallas.
Responding police officers engaged in a gunfight with the suspect, with two officers sustaining gunshot wounds at the scene.
Authorities report that all three officers were taken to the hospital. One officer was pronounced dead from his injuries. The second is in critical condition, Fox 4 continues to report. The third officer is expected to recover from his injuries.
Residential security video obtained by NBCDFW captured about 12 gunshots at 10:12 p.m. Other neighbors reported hearing “gunshots ringing out.”
Police have not released the identities of the three officers who were shot Thursday night. A Dallas police source said said According to WFAA ABC8, the dead officer was a rookie who had recently completed training. The female officer underwent surgery this morning and is in critical condition. The third officer was shot in the leg and is expected to survive, according to the report.
The suspect was involved in a shootout and led officers on a lengthy high-speed pursuit that ended in the Louisville suburb north of Dallas.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect was armed with a long gun when he exited his vehicle,” Dallas Police Public Information Officer Christine Roman told reporters at a press conference Friday morning. “Dallas officers then fired shots at the suspect, who died at the scene.”
WFAA reported that “guns and long guns” were recovered at the Louisville location on Stemmons Freeway.
Police say a motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.
A police honor guard gathered outside the hospital to pay tribute to the slain officer.
Just before sunrise, Dallas police led a procession to transport the slain officer from Methodist Hospital to the coroner's office.
“Our police department is suffering. We have officers who are injured and hospitalized, and we have lost our own guys,” Roman said. “Tonight and this morning, I ask for the thoughts and prayers of the city, not only for the officers recovering in the hospital, but also for those who lost their lives, their families and loved ones, and for our department.”
Texas Rangers have arrived in Louisville to investigate the officer-involved shooting of a still-unidentified suspect in the murder of an officer.
According to The Dallas officer is the 36th officer to be shot and killed so far this year, according to the Police Death Memorial page. At least 94 officers have been killed in the line of duty this year.
A week earlier, Investigator Taylor Bristow of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office in Georgia was shot and killed, bringing the total number of officers killed in shootings to six in August, according to the report.
