Max Homa takes shot at Tour Championship, uses NFL’s Chiefs as talking point

Max Homa missed this year's Tour Championship, but that means he can still entertain the masses on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

His first comments were about Scottie Scheffler and his first-round score, which shot a 6-under 65 to put him at 16 under after starting the tournament at 10 under.

The PGA Tour communications team posted that Scheffler was the first player to hold a lead of seven or more strokes after 18 holes since record-keeping began in 1983. In response, Homa called them out.

“The Chiefs scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 30-point lead, a new record,” Homa wrote.

His response doesn't make sense because it couldn't possibly make sense, that's his point.

If the Chiefs win by two, it's 14. To get a 30-point lead, they'd have to start the game at 16, which is virtually impossible. Obviously, that's not how playoffs or Super Bowls work in most sports.

The staggered stroke start is unique to the PGA Tour and was chosen as the format for the FedEx Cup finals. Some players and fans like it and accept it, but others dislike it. Even Scheffler doesn't like the format, calling it ridiculous at one point.

But it's hard to say Scheffler set any goalscoring records. Are they inflating his resume for 2024? It feels weird that they didn't add any context about the gradual start after this tweet.

In normal stroke play, his 6-under 65 would have put him ahead by one stroke, not seven.

Scheffler needed a 12-under 59 to take a seven-stroke lead after 18 holes, but he couldn't get there.

Homa's comments were spot on: He helped others understand how foolish it was for the PR team to say Schaeffler had set a record.

This post needs to be reevaluated or redone, and the Tour may need to add an asterisk to its record to mark the unique start to this event.

Context is crucial, but here they miss the point: without one of the most important pieces of information: the staggered start, this record would never have happened.
