She Supported It as VP

On Friday's CNN News Central broadcast, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware), co-chair of the Harris-Waltz campaign, was pointed out by co-host John Berman that 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris claimed to support fracking during the 2020 debates but never actually said so. Coons responded, “Part of what you're pointing out here is that VP Harris has supported fracking for the last four years as President Biden's vice president,” saying he is confident she supports fracking.

Berman asked, “I want to talk to you about this fracking thing, because last night, when pressed by Dana, Vice President Harris didn't explain how she went from saying she would ban fracking in 2019 to now saying she supports not banning it and allowing it to continue. Are you satisfied with her explanation? She said she supported fracking in the 2020 debate but she doesn't actually support it, she just said President Biden supports it.”

Coons responded, “Part of what you're pointing out here, John, is that Vice President Harris, as President Biden's vice president over the last four years, supported fracking and cast the deciding vote on a landmark bill that was the largest single investment any country has ever made to combat climate change. So I understand that Vice President Harris is taking the position that we've made great strides in combating climate change and that fracking has freed up natural resources that contribute to the security of the United States both internationally and domestically. I'm in Tokyo right now. Many other countries are looking to the United States. The United States is the world's leading producer of renewable energy and natural gas. That makes our economy more competitive, that enhances our national security, and that accelerates our trajectory to reduce total emissions.”
