Novak Djokovic falls to Alexei Popyrin in latest US Open shocker

The reigning US Open men's singles champion was defeated.

Novak Djokovic's bid for a historic 25th major title came to a shocking end on Friday night at the hands of Australian Alexei Popyrin, who won 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in his debut at Arthur Ashe Stadium to deny the second-seeded Serb a fifth title.

It was Popyrin's first win over Djokovic on a hard court in three tries.

It all depended on timing and circumstance, but Popyrin played like a player on the verge of the biggest win of his career.

The 25-year-old produced a slew of blistering forehand winners, won long rallies and made the most of Djokovic's mistakes.

Popyrin won 129 points to Djokovic's 127 to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career.
