Former CNN contributor Roland Martin has criticized Auburn University basketball coach Bruce Pearl, telling recruits not to attend his program following Pearl's comments about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
As he has done in the past, Perle made his political views known this election year, this time tweeting a quote from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) who said Harris was “so radical she wants to take away health insurance that comes with a job.”
Perle responded by calling Harris a “socialist.”

“Thank you Senator Cotton for bringing this up, but my guess is that, like many of her socialist, woke progressive beliefs, she's not changing or hiding it to win an election. We won't be fooled again!”
The post prompted Martin to issue a tweet imploring freshmen not to select a Black player, specifically, as the Tigers' head coach because of his public views.

“To all black players and parents considering enrolling at Auburn University basketball, this is trash tweeted by Bruce Pearl.” Martin said He quote-tweeted a message Pearl had sent Cotton: “There are plenty of other schools in the SEC to consider. Choose accordingly.”
USA Today columnist Dan Wolken also questioned Perle's views in a tweet of his own.

“Serious question: Has NIL changed the game so much that a college coach can say something like this on social media and not fear the negative impact it will have on his player recruitment in a household where the vice president is pretty popular?”
In a post on Wolken's feed, a fan brought up Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr's speech at the Democratic National Convention, where he publicly endorsed Harris, saying she, like Pearl, is free to express her political views.
“You don't seem to get the point,” Wolken responded with an X. “Steve Kerr shouldn't have to convince families to send their teenage children to college campuses for personal and professional growth in a highly competitive recruiting environment.”
Perle has also expressed strong pro-Israel views amid the current state of war between Israel and Hamas and is a long-time admirer of Donald Trump, praising the former president as brave after surviving an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last month.
