Caltrain's electric debut
Imagine this: It's a sunny day in San Francisco, and a sleek, modern train pulls into the station. But there's something different about this train. There's no diesel exhaust. No rumble of an engine. Just a quiet electric whir. That's right, folks: After nearly a decade of construction and 160 years of history, Caltrain is going electric.

On this memorable day, Caltrain brought together federal, state and local officials, transportation, business and labor leaders to celebrate the first electric train run. The VIP tour gave attendees a first-hand experience of the cutting-edge electric train that marks a groundbreaking shift to make the San Francisco Peninsula's public transportation network faster, more frequent and greener.
The first regular trains began running on August 11, with more trains due to be introduced every week until the fully electrified service begins on September 21.

What's the problem?
You may be thinking, “So what? It's just a train?” Wrong! This is revolutionary. These new electric trains will be able to travel between San Francisco and San Jose in under an hour. Plus, they accelerate and decelerate faster than diesel locomotives, increasing service by 20%. This means more robust and flexible access to the city across the entire rail system. During peak hours, trains will run every 15-20 minutes at 16 stations, and every 30 minutes at all stations on weekends.
Comfort is paramount on the new trains, which include Wi-Fi, on-board digital displays, power outlets at every seat, improved climate control, baby changing tables in the toilets and expanded storage space under the cantilevered seats.

Reducing emissions for a cleaner future
By switching from diesel to electric, Caltrain is reducing its carbon emissions by 250,000 tons per year, the equivalent of taking 55,000 cars off the road each year. This transition not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, it also improves air quality, reduces traffic congestion, and helps meet ambitious local and state climate action goals.

Economic and community revitalization
The Caltrain Electrification Project is more than just transportation. It's a critical economic driver. The project is creating 33,000 jobs in 36 states and spurring economic growth and innovation in the local community and across the nation. This collaborative effort to manufacture electric trains and infrastructure highlights a commitment to sustainability and job creation.
Additionally, electrification projects promote equity along the rail line by reducing noise and air pollution and increasing access and services to equity-priority communities by 26% – a win-win for both the environment and communities.
