President Joe Biden issued a statement Saturday evening saying he had “worked tirelessly” to secure the release of Hersh Goldberg Pollin and the other hostages who were killed, and insisted he would “continue to work around the clock to reach an agreement.”
Biden was on a two-week vacation, first in Santa Barbara, California, and then in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It's unclear how he managed to work “non-stop” or “around the clock” while on vacation.
His formula statement The following is emphasized:
Israeli forces discovered the bodies of six hostages held by Hamas in an underground tunnel in the city of Rafah early today. One of the hostages killed by the vicious Hamas terrorists has been identified as American national Hersh Goldberg Pollin.
I am devastated and outraged. Hersh was among the innocent people brutally attacked while attending a Music for Peace festival in Israel on October 7th. He lost an arm while helping friends and strangers in a brutal Hamas massacre. He had just turned 23 and was set to travel the world. I got to know his parents, John and Rachel. They were brave, wise and indomitable while enduring unimaginable circumstances. They were relentless and irrepressible advocates for their son and for all hostages held in inhumane conditions. I admire them and grieve with them more deeply than words can express. I know all Americans are praying for them tonight, as Jill and I are. I've been working without rest They were unable to bring their beloved Haash back safely and are heartbroken by the news of his death, which is as reprehensible as it is tragic. No doubt, Hamas leaders will pay a price for these crimes. We will continue to work day and night to reach an agreement. To ensure the release of the remaining hostages.
Biden has maintained a low profile since dropping out of the presidential race in late July.
Goldberg-Polin was a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen whose body was discovered Saturday in an underground tunnel in the Gaza Strip city of Rafah along with five other hostages who had been shot in the head less than 48 hours before being rescued by Israeli forces.
