Is ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ worth watching? | REVIEW

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has all but ruined its reputation with the string of excruciatingly woke films it has produced over the past few years.

Lauren Chen has been a scathing critic of the franchise's progressive agenda in films such as: “The Fantastic Four”” “Madame Web” “Amazing” and “echo.

But Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, may have broken that curse.

“It's a very good movie,” says Lauren.

And even though the film involves multiverse hopping — a plot point that Lauren said Marvel has “taken too far” — Deadpool and Wolverine are still “a lot of fun scenes.”

Of the two leading characters, “They play off each other so well,” Lauren said, adding that the fact that Reynolds and Jackman are friends in real life shines through through the interactions between their characters.

Another fun part of the movie is the numerous superhero cameos, including famous celebrities such as Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, Wesley Snipes, Chris Evans, and Blake Lively.

But the film is not without its flaws.

For example, Lauren says the Deadpool movies take the “tongue-in-cheek comedy” a bit too far.

“More isn't necessarily better,” she said, adding that “the parts where I was breaking the fourth wall and being sarcastic seemed a bit over the top.”

As for the role of Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin, Lauren was pleasantly surprised: she was initially disappointed with the casting as she couldn't imagine Corrin portrayed as a scary villain, but the actress managed to capture the “madness” and “creepiness” well.

“In the end, I was really disappointed. [Corrin’s character] “He didn't have a very large role in the movie,” she said, noting that Nova would have made a better antagonist than the “unnecessarily evil” and ambiguous-motivated Paradox.

Paradoxically, one of the best things about Deadpool & Wolverine is also its most limiting characteristic: its sheer fan service.

Not only is the film packed with “funny references” to other Marvel superheroes, but it also includes references to “superhero movies of the last 20 years.” This aspect of the film will no doubt excite longtime superhero movie fans. However, the cameos could easily alienate younger generations who haven't lived long enough to see all the movies, as well as “regular people” who don't watch superhero movies that often.

“These people are going to miss out on a lot of what's going on because they haven't seen other movies,” Lauren says.
