Oscar Piastri’s stunning overtake of Lando Norris is worth a second look

In the hours since the dramatic Italian Grand Prix, the F1 world has been engaged in fierce debate about how McLaren will navigate the 2024 season. The Woking-based team is chasing Red Bull in the constructors' championship, while Lando Norris is attempting to do the same in the drivers' standings alongside Max Verstappen, and much of the talk has focused on how the team will navigate the dual challenge.

The instructions on how they will race each other are especially important given the now famous “Papaya Rule” instructions given to both Norris and Piastri at Monza. On the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix, Piastri made an aggressive move on Norris and passed him at Turn 4. As Norris said after the race, it was quite a tightrope walk that Piastri had to balance: “I don't know what I should have done there.” After the race, Norris said to Nico Rosberg:“If I had braked just one metre later, I probably would have had an accident.”

McLaren CEO Zak Brown explained the instructions: “The Papaya rule is, he's your teammate, be hard, be clean, don't touch him. That's what happened. It was an aggressive overtake so we'll have a discussion. There was a bit of tension on the pit wall but it's really just about respecting your teammate.”

Putting the “papaya rule” aside, one thing is clear: Piastri's audacious overtake was perhaps one of the highlights of the season, alongside Alexander Albon's stunning double pass at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Plus, thanks to on-board camera technology, we got even more fantastic footage of Piastri's overtake from his and Norris's perspective.

As the old horse racing saying goes,[i]”If you stop going for the gaps that are there, you're no longer a racing driver.” Piastri spotted the gap, went for it and pulled off one of the most amazing overtaking moves all year.

It remains to be seen whether this will be the proverbial butterfly flapping its wings and affect the course of the entire 2024 F1 season.
