Former Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pennsylvania) said on CNBC's “Squawk Box” on Tuesday that he doesn't think Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris has suddenly become a “centrist.”
“Republicans need to take control of the Senate, they absolutely need to,” Toomey said. “If the opposition takes control and Katie closes the door, they'll repeal the filibuster and be dragged along by the left, who is clearly in control now. I think the election of Kamala Harris as vice president proves that. It's huge tax increases, it's probably something like Medicare for All, and it may end up in the Supreme Court because it's unstoppable. But the good news is that Republicans will take control of the Senate.”
He continued, “I think it's really helpful to look at what she actually did. As a senator, she had the most liberal record in the Senate. She was more to the left of Bernie Sanders. She supported Medicare for All, she banned fracking, she was totally aligned with the far left. When she had to choose a running mate, she could have made a wise choice. Josh Shapiro would have sent a message that she would govern from the center, and she didn't. That tells you who's in control. She's from the left wing of the party and she's going to go there.”
Toomey added: “I don't buy the notion that she's now a centrist. She's never been a centrist.”
