18-month-old girl dies after getting mauled by dog inside New Jersey home, police say

New Jersey State Police say the toddler sustained a fatal injury A teenager was attacked by a dog he was caring for at a Newark home Tuesday evening.

“The distraught family has asked for privacy.”

Police said the girl had gotten separated from her babysitter and encountered a pit bull, one of four dogs at the Second Avenue home.

The girl suffered serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead at about 7 p.m., according to the Essex County Coroner's Office.

The four dogs were removed from the home and police are trying to determine if only one dog attacked the child or if other dogs were involved. The dogs were placed in quarantine with Newark Animal Control.

“Investigations are ongoing and the official cause and manner of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination.” said Chief Deputy Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.

The family are heartbroken by the tragic incident and have asked for their privacy to be respected.

“Seeing so many police there and all the commotion really worried me.” said “I couldn't see, so I couldn't do anything,” a neighbor told WCBS-TV.

Pit bulls are responsible for more bites than any other dog breed in the United States. According to According to the American Animal Hospital Association, this breed is more likely to suffer fatal attacks than any other breed.
