US Open: Sinner still the one to beat as men’s semifinals are set

The 2024 US Open men's singles semifinals will see Americans Francis Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz face off. The final Grand Slam of the year promises an exciting conclusion, but whoever makes it to the semifinals will likely struggle to beat the winner of the other matchup, between Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner.

Tiafoe and Fritz won their quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, while No. 25 Draper and No. 1 Sinner beat Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev, respectively, on Wednesday. Tiafoe, the 20th seed, and Fritz, the 12th seed, will play on Friday for the right to face the winner of that other match.

Depending on the outcome, they could be favored over Draper or significantly worse than Sinner, the tournament's top seed who needed four sets to beat Medvedev in his final quarterfinal match but remains the favorite to win.

The 23-year-old Sinner barely struggled in the first set, fending off two break points and converting two of three to win 6-2. But Medvedev regained momentum in the second set, building a 5-0 lead, fending off a Sinner break in the fifth game and hitting two aces to win. The third set went to Sinner, who made 82 percent of his first serves. The fourth set was close, but Medvedev gradually ran out of gas as Sinner continued to apply pressure.

Sinner ultimately prevailed 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to claim his second Grand Slam victory over Medvedev this season. Sinner won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year (against Medvedev) and reached a career-best semifinal appearance at the French Open.

Draper, seeded 25th, upset No. 10 seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He took control from the start and won in a big way against the first seeded opponent in the tournament. Draper, who boasts his highest singles ranking ever, is looking to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal after reaching the second round at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.

While Tiafoe had been playing good tennis up to this point, Fritz was the more impressive player in the quarterfinals. He beat his first three opponents in straight sets before falling behind in two matches against No. 8 seed Casper Ruud and No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev. Fritz needed four sets to beat both, but beat Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 and Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal.

The 26-year-old Fritz has already had his best results at the four Grand Slams this year – quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, a run into the fourth round and semifinals at the French Open – making it his best year at a major tournament and leading Tiafoe 6-1 in his head-to-head series.

Tiafoe hasn't had as much success, but this semifinal matches his best performance since competing in a Grand Slam in 2022. It was almost over when he dropped two sets to 13th seed Ben Shelton, but he ultimately won that match in five sets to reach the round of 16. Tiafoe is fresh off a quarterfinal win over ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov, but Dimitrov was injured and forced to withdraw after dropping two of his first three sets.

The men's semifinal is scheduled for Friday, September 6. The men's semifinal will take place at Arthur Ashe Stadium with a rest day in between, while the women's semifinal will take place on Thursday. The first of the two men's matches is scheduled to start around 3pm ET, with the final match scheduled to begin under the lights at 7pm.

Television and streaming coverage will be provided by ESPN and ESPN Plus, with the semifinals broadcast live on ESPN. Below is the schedule for the men's semifinals, followed by a look at each player's progress through the tournament and into the final round.
