Pete Alonso's poor showing at the plate got even worse on Wednesday night at Citi Field, when he struck out for the third time and then broke his bat under his foot on his way back to the dugout.
Alonso struck out with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the first inning, marking just the second time a first baseman has failed to perform in a key moment against the Red Sox.
But that didn't count against the Mets, who were in top form after beating the Red Sox 8-3 to extend their winning streak to seven games.
Alonso was hitless in four at-bats and struck out three times, but was saved by a grand slam by Jesse Winker on the following inning.
In the eighth inning, with the Mets leading by one run, Alonso reached base with runners on first and second and struck out again, but the cost was felt at the plate.
