Nevada State Police announced that they had arrested a 47-year-old woman on suspicion of breaking into a funeral home late last month, stealing a casket and abandoning a body in front of the funeral home.
Obtained documents From KLAS-TV Las Vegas police said they received a call around 3 a.m. on Aug. 27 about a body lying face-down in front of the Affordable Cremation and Burial Services funeral home on Charleston Boulevard.
She claimed she had no memory of the incident due to a substance abuse problem, and that she had lost consciousness after drinking six bottles of beer.
After police investigation, they determined the body was that of a woman in her 60s who had recently died.
Security cameras from inside the business showed a woman entering and stealing a coffin, with a body inside. KLAS reported that the door to the funeral home was open and there was broken glass inside. The woman then allegedly dumped the body on landscaping rocks outside the funeral home.
Two days later, someone at a convenience store on Valley View Boulevard recognized the suspect and called authorities.
Police identified the suspect as Patricia Sierra.
When police questioned Sierra, she reportedly apologised and claimed she “had no malicious intent”. She reportedly admitted to being the person seen in the CCTV footage, but claimed she had no recollection of the incident due to substance abuse issues and that she had lost consciousness after drinking six beers.
Sierra was charged with grand theft, burglary of a business, removal of a human body, alteration and mutilation, and his bail was set at $11,000. Jail records show Sierra is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 18.
